This project is a reinterpretation of Mary Cassatt’s Spanish Girl Peeling an Orange. My goal was to capture the spirit of Cassatt’s original while infusing it with my own personal and cultural perspective. Instead of an orange, the subject, my mother, is peeling a Mantecada, a traditional Mexican sweet bread muffin. She becomes a “Mexican girl peeling a muffin,” merging classical portraiture with a playful, intimate nod to heritage.
